United Way Board Member Spotlight – Kristie Haefner

Tell us a little about you and your family:

I grew up in Wadena, MN where my parents still reside. I have two older brothers, one in Duluth, MN and one in Nashville, TN. I moved to Willmar to attend Ridgewater College right out of high school and moved back after finishing my Bachelor’s degree because I loved the area so much. I proceeded to meet and fall in love with an amazing man. Travis and I have been married for 6 years and have a 2 year old son named Gabriel. I love to golf, curl up with a good book, vacation, and do anything that allows me to spend time with my family and friends.

Where do you work and what is your role?

I work at Christianson CPAs and Consultants, where I am the Firm Administrator.

What inspired you to be involved with United Way?

I was introduced to the United Way through my previous job and instantly became an advocate. I jumped at the chance to get involved when asked to become a Board Member. I have always felt that it’s my responsibility to give back to my community and United Way presented the perfect opportunity for me to do just that. I believe in the work that United Way does and I know that we are truly making an impact on the lives of people right here in our community.

What is the most rewarding thing you have taken from this experience?

Learning about the different programs that we are helping to fund and the people we are serving. Knowing that we are making a difference in the lives of people in our community.

What is one word you would use to sum up United Way’s work?

Meaningful!

What impresses you most about the United Way of West Central Minnesota?

The dedicated staff, volunteers, and generous donors that make the work we do possible.

What is one thing about United Way that you think most people don’t know?

We do a lot to educate those that receive funding from United Way. We don’t just hand out money and hope that fixes the problem. We work to educate people to find long term solutions.

What advice would you give to a potential donor who is considering investing in United Way?

Know that the dollars you give are being used wisely. Talk to our staff or board members and get to know our process for funding programs. Get to know what programs we fund and who we are helping.
